Melor: The Raja Perempuan of Kelantan Tengku Anis Tengku Abdul Hamid today officially launched the An-Nisa Fish Farm at Masjid D’Raja Tengku Aziza, here. During the ceremony, Tengku Anis released 1,000 tilapia fry, each measuring three to four inches, into the pond.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Agrobank chief executive officer, Datuk Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah Raja Hussin, said that the An-Nisa Fish Farm is a pilot project, launched by Agrobank, to empower urban agriculture through Biofloc Technology, an aquaculture system which uses microbial biotech for fish farming. He mentioned that Agrobank has allocated RM80,000 for the project, intending to expand it to four more mosques in the state, specifically in the districts of Kota Bharu, Tumpat, Pasir Mas, and Machang, with the potential to extend it to mosques nationwide.
Ahmad Badli Shah noted that the four additional mosques have not been decided yet, and discussions will be held with the Kelantan Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIK). Each mosque will receive up to RM15,000 to implement this fish farming initiative. He emphasized that Biofloc Technology aims to transform the aquaculture industry by reducing water exchange, where domestic waste is converted into useful products.
The project is intended to provide mosques with opportunities to generate income through urban agriculture activities, particularly fish farming. Ahmad Badli Shah stated that in three to four months, mosques can harvest up to 500 kilogrammes of fish. He added that this effort could indirectly generate income for the mosque while fostering ties among congregants and the local community.
