Public Urged to Report Rohingya Misconduct to Authorities: Perak Police

Perak: The public is advised not to take action against the Rohingya ethnic group themselves but rather channel any complaints or relevant information to the police for appropriate action. Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin emphasized that any misconduct by the Rohingya ethnic group should be reported to the authorities, ensuring that action will be taken in accordance with existing law.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Mohd Alwi stated, "If there is misconduct by the Rohingya, they (the public) should file a police report first so that the police themselves can take the appropriate action." He made these remarks at a press conference following the handover ceremony of the Perak Commercial Crime Investigation Department Head at the Senior Police Officers' Mess in Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah. The police chief further noted that his department has not yet received any complaints regarding criminal activities or misconduct by the Rohingya group in the state.

The statement comes in response to a social media campaign calling for the capture of Rohingya in Perak. Addressing concerns about the town of Manjung being a significant settlement for the Rohingya ethnic group, Mohd Alwi mentioned that discussions with the state government would be considered if assistance or action from authorities is needed. He assured that regular monitoring of the Rohingya ethnic group would be maintained.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad previously reported that Manjung, a rapidly developing district due to its construction and maritime industries, likely hosts the largest Rohingya population in the state. Many among this group hold United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) cards. Saarani noted that the influx of ethnic groups from western Myanmar could have implications for local communities, including security concerns.

In related developments, Supt Mohd Ridzuan Nor Ihsan has been appointed as the acting head of the Perak Commercial Crime Investigation Department, succeeding ACP Mohd Fahmi Visuvanathan Abdullah, who is set to retire on June 18.
