Prime Minister Anwar Urges Malaysians to Reduce Sugar Intake

Perai: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on Malaysians to significantly cut back on sugar consumption, citing unhealthy eating habits as a major factor contributing to the rising public health burden. This, he noted, places added pressure on the national healthcare system.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted that sugar consumption in Malaysia ranks among the highest in Asia. Despite substantial government spending on healthcare, he emphasized the need to promote healthy eating to prevent various illnesses. He delivered these remarks at the launch of a new block at Seberang Jaya Hospital.

Anwar advocated for intensified awareness campaigns on reducing sugar intake, suggesting that hospitals and government premises should offer healthier food and drink options. He proposed limiting sugary drinks in all hospitals and providing food and beverages with minimal sugar at official government functions as a public education measure.

Furthermore, Anwar recommended that hospitals and clinics take a proactive role in displaying posters and clear health messages to inform the public about the dangers of excessive sugar consumption.

Regarding the new block at Seberang Jaya Hospital, the Prime Minister described it as a significant enhancement to healthcare service capacity in Seberang Perai and the surrounding areas. This development reflects the government's dedication to delivering more effective, timely, and accessible treatment for the public.
