Kuala lumpur: The decision to postpone the re-tabling of the Urban Renewal Bill (URB) or the Urban Renewal Act (URA) in Parliament was made after taking into account 14 improvement proposals submitted at the URA Convention held on October 3 last year. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi emphasized the need for deferment to ensure the Bill is fortified by incorporating the views of various stakeholders who participated in the convention. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the president of UMNO, stated that the postponement was necessary because the existing Bill requires consideration of the 14 recommendations discussed at the convention organized by UMNO Wilayah. The convention saw participation from numerous NGOs, industry players, and individuals who aim to enhance the URA before it is re-tabled in Parliament in the subsequent session. Ahmad Zahid conveyed this information while speaking to reporters after officiating a dinner celebrating the Golden Jubilee of the Indonesian Higher Education Alumni Association (PAPTI). Earlier, UMNO secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki affirmed that the party remains supportive of urban development but highlighted the need for improvements and refinements to the URB. He mentioned that several amendments must be made as advised by the UMNO Special Committee on the URB, led by its vice-president Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. Asyraf Wajdi explained that the Special Committee had organized several engagement sessions, including the URA Convention on October 3 of the previous year, which resulted in the approval of 14 proposals for enhancements to the Bill for the government's consideration.
