Ankara: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on emerging economies to realize their future potential by forging new and mutually beneficial economic alliances, independent of the dictates of major powers such as the United States and China.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar emphasized the importance of supporting alliances like BRICS, ASEAN, and networks among Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) countries that advocate for free and fair trade within a rules-based international order. Speaking during a public lecture on 'Power Shift: Strategic Choices For Malaysia and Turkiye' in Ankara, Anwar urged middle powers to broaden their horizons and capitalize on their potential.
Anwar stressed the necessity of collaboration, highlighting the potential for Southeast Asia to effectively engage in trade, investments, and other fields while remaining open to new markets. Acknowledging the economic rivalry between the US and China, he noted the importance of maintaining excellent relations with both nations while being aware of regional developments.
The Prime Minister also criticized the contradictions between proclaimed international principles and actual actions, citing examples from Gaza and Venezuela. He called for a consistent moral voice and emphasized Malaysia's pursuit of a modern economic framework incorporating new technologies to become a leader in semiconductor data centers and artificial intelligence.
