Kuala lumpur: Efforts to strengthen the understanding of history among the young need to be enhanced to foster interest in the country’s history and further build patriotism, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar, who is also the Minister of Finance, emphasized the importance of history despite the nation’s move towards digitalisation and artificial intelligence (AI), highlighting that historical knowledge is crucial for young people to navigate current challenges effectively.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar made these remarks while speaking at the launch, presentation of credentials, and meeting of the National Historians Council. He stressed the need for innovative approaches to make the country’s history more engaging and accessible to the younger generation, suggesting the use of materials such as leaflets and pictures to pique their interest.
Anwar pointed out that alongside historical education, young people should be trained in various disciplines, including language, religious culture, and AI, without forgetting the moral values stemming from historical truths. He described history as not merely a discipline but a crucial element of knowledge about society and civilization, particularly in a developing nation like Malaysia.
Moreover, Anwar emphasized the role of history in teaching morality and maintaining transparency. He asserted that civilization is built not just on technological advancements but also on culture and history, and that Malaysian civilization should reflect these foundations.
Regarding the National Historians Council, Anwar highlighted its role in fostering discourse with various parties and advising the government on improving historical literacy. He underscored the council’s responsibility to continuously engage in dialogues and guide governmental efforts in this area.
The event was attended by notable figures including National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, Speaker of Dewan Rakyat Tan Sri Johari Abdul, Deputy National Unity Minister K Saraswathy, and Director-General of Public Service Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz.
