Kuala Lumpur: The Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) assured that electricity tariffs in Peninsular Malaysia, including the new tariff schedule under the Incentive Based Regulation mechanism for the Regulatory Period 4 (RP4), will consider the well-being of the people. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who is also Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, stated that any increase that can burden the rakyat is not allowed, aligning with the instruction by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof mentioned that his ministry, through the Energy Commission, had engaged with industry players and the business community on January 13 and February 5 regarding the matter. He emphasized that the ministry will refine the feedback received to be used as input for setting the new tariff schedule in the future. This is to ensure that all users, especially those in the industry, can be more prepared for the changes and use electricity more efficiently.
During a question and answer session in the Dewan Rakyat, Fadillah responded to a query from Datuk Abdul Khalib Abdullah (PN-Rompin), who questioned the rationale behind Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s intention to raise electricity tariffs despite contrary plans in the closest neighboring country. In his response, Fadillah stressed that any official announcement concerning the fixing of electricity tariffs in Peninsular Malaysia will only be made by the government.
