Perak Government Reaffirms Commitment to Protect Malayan Tiger and Other Endangered Species

Taiping: The Perak government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting endangered species, particularly the Malayan tiger, an icon of the nation’s natural heritage. State Science, Environment and Green Technology Committee chairman, Teh Kok Lim, highlighted the essential role of Zoo Taiping and Night Safari (ZTNS) as a crucial conservation centre during the 64th Anniversary Celebration of ZTNS.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Teh emphasized the Malayan tiger’s critical status, noting its categorization as a critically endangered species. He stressed that conservation efforts must be a shared responsibility to prevent the extinction of this national symbol. Teh praised ZTNS for organizing high-impact programmes focused on education and environmental sustainability, aligning with its mission.

Khairul Amir Mohamad Zubir, president of the Taiping Municipal Council, also spoke at the event, underscoring ZTNS’s active role in conservation. As the country’s oldest zoo, it engages in ex-situ breeding of endangered species, collaborates with research institutions, and participates in animal rehabilitation and release programmes. Khairul Amir highlighted the zoo’s efforts in conserving national treasures such as the Malayan tiger, Asian elephant, and tapir.

In celebration of ZTNS’s 64th anniversary, various activities were organized, including the launch of the Hop-On Hop-Off (HOHO) Bus service, providing visitors an informative experience exploring Taiping’s key attractions. Khairul Amir announced several upcoming educational programmes, including the World Orangutan Day Celebration, Zoorama 2025, and Taiping Bird Week.
