Perak Government Intensifies Monitoring of Rohingya Community Activities

Perak: The Perak government will enhance its monitoring of activities involving the Rohingya ethnic community within the state to ensure that public safety and order are consistently upheld.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad stated that the monitoring efforts, undertaken in collaboration with relevant authorities, were initiated following information from the National Security Council (MKN). This information indicated that a small number of individuals from the Rohingya community had constructed facilities, such as houses and schools.

"Most of the Rohingya community are located in Manjung, and many of them are seen wearing badges issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Malaysia. We are not certain of their authenticity," Saarani remarked while speaking to reporters after officiating the Perak-Level Falak Month Launch Ceremony for 1448H/2026.

He further explained that the state government has yet to ascertain the exact number of Rohingya residing in Perak, and several preliminary findings are being reviewed to gain a clearer understanding of the situation. Saarani expressed concern over reports suggesting that the community's numbers are substantial, which may lead to a sense of empowerment among them.

"Although we have not encountered any major issues involving the Rohingya community thus far, we are prepared to take appropriate actions should any undesirable incidents occur," he added.

As per data available on the UNHCR website, a total of 193,824 Rohingya were registered as refugees and asylum seekers in Malaysia as of February this year.
