Ipoh: The Perak state government has announced a ban on the sale and consumption of liquor during the chariot procession at the Thaipusam celebration, which is set to take place at the Sri Subramaniar Temple in Gunung Cheroh from February 10 to 12.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the decision was made following complaints from devotees and visitors about the prevalence of alcohol consumption during previous celebrations. A. Sivanesan, the chairman of the Perak Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs, and National Integration Committee, emphasized that this is the first time such a ban will be enforced. He noted that previous complaints highlighted rampant alcohol sales and drinking during the float procession, particularly at night, with no strict actions taken in the past. This year, authorities will take a zero-tolerance approach, and anyone caught selling or consuming liquor will face arrest and court action.
The festival is expected to draw around 350,000 people to the temple, a key site for Hindus during Thaipusam. To ensure a smooth celebration, 400 policemen will be stationed at the location, assisted by several other agencies throughout the three-day event.
Sivanesan advised the public to avoid certain routes-namely Jalan Raja Muda Aziz, Jalan Sultan Idris, Jalan Sultan Yusof, Jalan Lahat, Jalan Tun Perak, and Jalan Sungai Pari-around the temple to prevent congestion. Although these roads will not be closed, the public is urged to steer clear during the chariot procession.
In addition, Sivanesan called on individuals interested in setting up stalls near the temple to apply for permits through the Ipoh City Council (MBI) by February 8. He warned that those who attempt to hawk without a permit will face enforcement actions.
