Penang: Several assemblymen have urged the Penang state government to implement a ban on the sale of electronic cigarettes, or vapes, at all business premises, following the footsteps of states like Kedah, Johor, and Terengganu.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, A. Kumaresan (PH-Batu Uban) highlighted the growing concern over vape usage among teenagers and the elderly, suggesting that the state government should investigate policy and legal avenues for progressive actions. He emphasized the importance of establishing a clear stance on the sale of vapes and electronic cigarettes, particularly concerning teenagers, due to its implications on public health and the future of young people.
Mohamad Shukor Zakariah (PN-Pulau Betong) also expressed concerns over the increasing prevalence of vape use among school students, advocating for a ban on sales within Penang. He noted the alarming trend of addiction in secondary school students across five states, including Penang, as highlighted by a three-year survey by the Penang Consumers Association (CAP) which revealed that 8,000 out of 15,000 students caught in possession of vape were users, including 2,000 female students. The survey also found 4,000 primary school students using vapes.
Mohd Yusni Mat Piah (PN-Penaga) warned of the critical problem posed by vape addiction among young individuals, pointing out the dangerous substances often contained in vapes. He cited a case where a student in Penaga experienced severe consequences after using a ‘magic mushroom’ vape, resulting in depression and disrupted schooling.
On April 29, Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen mentioned that a meeting with relevant agencies was convened to discuss the proposed ban, which will be presented to the State Executive Council.
The State Assembly session will continue tomorrow.
