Pahang: Orang Asli students in Pahang pursuing studies at public institutions of higher learning (IPTA) will now automatically qualify for free laptops provided by the state government, announced Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail. This initiative serves as a symbolic ‘gift’ in celebration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples and underscores the state government’s commitment to supporting the Orang Asli, especially in education.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Wan Rosdy stated that in the past, Orang Asli students had to apply for the laptops; however, the new policy ensures that they will receive them automatically, alleviating the financial burden of purchasing laptops as they further their education. The announcement was made at the state-level celebration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples at the RPS Bukit Serok settlement.
The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, first celebrated in 1995, is observed annually on August 9. Wan Rosdy expressed his desire to see the Orang Asli community on par with other communities in achieving success, with a particular emphasis on education as a transformative tool. He highlighted the importance of reducing the dropout rate among the Orang Asli.
He also praised the efforts of Yayasan Pahang, which have contributed to rising literacy rates among the Orang Asli. Wan Rosdy called on government agencies to further assist in enhancing the capabilities of the Orang Asli, particularly in education, reaffirming the state government’s dedication to holistic community development.
Currently, Pahang is home to 95,382 Orang Asli, the largest population in Peninsular Malaysia, comprised of three main ethnic groups: Senoi, Proto-Malay, and Negrito.
