Pahang: Pahang has become the first state in Malaysia to produce prebiotic rice, marketed under the brand name Beras Pahang. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail stated that this rice is distinct from other local varieties due to its multiple benefits, such as being low in sugar and suitable for individuals with diabetes. Currently, it is available in limited quantities, with initial sales focused in Pahang before expanding to other states.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the rice is cultivated in the Ganchong paddy fields in Pekan and is noted for being tastier, more fragrant, and softer. Its prebiotic content supports digestion and overall bowel health. At the Pahang Mini MAHA 2025 event, Beras Pahang was priced at RM8 per kilogramme.
Wan Rosdy mentioned that the inaugural Pahang Mini MAHA 2025 will be held at different locations each year due to an overwhelming response, with over 80,000 visitors recorded. He cited the Malaysian Agriculture Census interim report, highlighting Pahang as the country’s second-largest contributor to the agriculture sector, following Johor, with sales amounting to RM25.12 billion, largely driven by the crop subsector.
He further elaborated on the state’s agricultural achievements, noting palm oil’s contribution of RM14.18 billion and vegetable production in Cameron Highlands generating RM3.6 billion for both domestic and international markets. Musang King durian added RM2.42 billion, while fresh milk output reached 9.05 million litres valued at RM47.25 million, positioning Pahang as the top producer in Malaysia. Pahang is also advancing in the high-value livestock industry, particularly with wagyu cattle, boosting the state’s economic returns and establishing its reputation as a premium livestock producer.
