Over 2.2 Million Vehicles Expected To Enter Penang During Christmas, School Holidays

Penang: Over 2.2 million vehicles are anticipated to enter Penang from today for the Christmas and year-end school holidays, as stated by state police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail. The expected influx is based on patterns observed during previous festive seasons and the ongoing Pesta Pulau Pinang, which started on December 6 and will continue until January 10, 2026.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) predicts about two million vehicles will traverse major highways nationwide, including those heading to Penang, over a week during the peak festive period. The trend from the 2025 major festive season indicates Penang typically receives around 2.2 million vehicles via the first and second Penang bridges.

The anticipated surge is likely to cause congestion on several routes, notably at the entrances to the Penang Bridges. Traffic is expected to increase significantly today and tomorrow, following the government's announcement of a 50 per cent toll discount during this period. Similar congestion is expected at the Juru and Sungai Dua exits along the North-South Expressway (PLUS), with George Town and main routes to Batu Feringghi, including Jalan Air Itam and Jalan Green Lane, also experiencing heavier traffic due to incoming tourists.

In response to the expected traffic conditions, Penang police are prepared to deploy additional personnel to strategic locations as a precaution. The PDRM has launched Op Lancar to ensure a swift response to any incidents within 24 hours. This special operation is active throughout the state, especially on highways, city roads, and federal roads, to maintain smooth traffic flow during the Christmas holiday period.

Furthermore, the state police, in collaboration with the Penang City Council (MBPP), have increased personnel presence through regular patrols in tourist hotspots. The public is advised to plan their journeys to avoid peak congestion times and remain vigilant to risks from heavy rains, including falling trees, particularly in urban areas like Jalan Penang.
