Over 10,000 Offenders Receive Community Service Orders Nationwide

Nancy: A total of 10,522 cases nationwide were imposed with Community Service Orders (CSOs) from 2008 to 2024, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. She highlighted that out of these, 8,125 cases involved young offenders, 2,163 involved child offenders, and 234 involved adult offenders. The offenses varied, with the maximum CSO period being 240 hours.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nancy emphasized the importance of second chances through CSOs, noting, “We’ve all made mistakes. The difference is that not everyone is given a second chance, but through CSOs, we provide individuals undergoing them with the opportunity to improve themselves.” She stressed that CSOs are not merely alternative punishments but serve as a space for recovery, helping to rebuild self-confidence, reshape identity, and offer a second chance to reintegrate into society as improved individuals.

Nancy also referenced a study by Universiti Utara Malaysia, which found that CSOs had a positive impact on offenders’ attitudes, emotions, and social integration. The minister shared these insights at the Community Service Order awareness programme, underscoring the program’s role in offering rehabilitative opportunities.
