OTSM’s RM2 Bln Investment Bolsters Sarawak’s Tech Hub Aspirations

Bintulu: OCI Tokuyama Semiconductor Materials Sdn Bhd’s (OTSM) RM2 billion investment to establish a semiconductor-grade polysilicon plant at the Samalaju Industrial Park is a strategic milestone that reinforces Sarawak’s position in the global semiconductor value chain. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasized that this joint venture between South Korea’s OCI Company Ltd and Japan’s Tokuyama Corporation showcases international confidence in Sarawak’s political stability, industrial infrastructure, and long-term development vision.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Premier highlighted the significance of this investment during the groundbreaking ceremony, noting its role in advancing high-technology industrial development in the region. The facility will be the first of its kind outside Japan and South Korea, producing high-purity polysilicon-a crucial material for semiconductors used in smartphones, electric vehicles, data centres, and artificial intelligence.

The project aligns with Sarawak’s Semiconductor Strategic Framework, aiming to position the state as a regional hub for advanced technology manufacturing. Abang Johari reaffirmed Sarawak’s strengthening position in the global semiconductor value chain, moving it closer to becoming a regional technology hub.

Sarawak’s commitment to sustainability was also underscored, with Premier Abang Johari stating that 70 percent of the state’s electricity is generated from hydropower, complemented by emerging solar technologies. This positions Sarawak as a key location for sustainable and environmentally friendly investments, aligning with the state’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS).

In addition to manufacturing, Sarawak is focusing on innovation within the semiconductor sector. The state government is collaborating with academic institutions in the United Kingdom to develop an artificial intelligence-powered semiconductor chip, with plans to secure international intellectual property registration by year-end.

To support the burgeoning tech industry, Sarawak is also investing in education by providing free tertiary education for Sarawakians through state universities. This initiative ensures a skilled talent pool ready to meet the demands of emerging industries.

In conclusion, Premier Abang Johari remarked that sustainable and green products will define global competitiveness, and Sarawak is prepared to meet that challenge head-on.
