Negeri Sembilan: The interactive session of the Online Safety Campaign organised by the Negeri Sembilan branch of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has enhanced awareness among school and university students regarding digital threats and ethical internet use.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the programme, which included various educational activities such as talks, simulations, and open discussions, covered topics on cybersecurity, online scams, data misuse, and ethical practices while browsing the internet.
Ahmad Junaidi Abdul Karim, Information and Communications Technology teacher from Sekolah Kebangsaan Felda Pasoh 4, Jelebu, reported that a total of 72 pupils aged between 10 and 12 participated in the programme and were able to better understand both the benefits and risks of internet usage. He stated that while most pupils are proficient in using mobile phones and the internet, they still require guidance to comprehend the boundaries and dangers of its use.
‘Pupils were informed about the prohibition of having social media accounts due to threats such as cyberbullying and cyber sexual crimes. They were also taught the steps to take if they receive suspicious messages, including informing a responsible adult family member,’ he told Bernama. Ahmad Junaidi suggested that such campaigns be expanded and held regularly to ensure that the message of internet safety is fully understood, especially by children under 12 years old.
He also highlighted the importance of parents monitoring their children’s use of gadgets to prevent them from falling into social problems or becoming victims of cybercrime, including sexual exploitation.
Meanwhile, through the Train of Trainer (ToT) workshop held under the Online Safety Campaign involving Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) students and the MADANI community at the Seremban campus recently, participants were also exposed to online safety, including social media etiquette, personal data protection, and methods to handle cyber threats wisely and effectively.
A total of 63 participants shared ideas during the programme, which was also attended by MCMC Southern Region Senior Director Mohamad Rizal Ahmad and the state MCMC Director, Ts Md Tahir Musa. Nurul Hazwani Mad Shah, a representative of the Student Representative Council of UiTM Negeri Sembilan Campus, said the programme offered a clear insight to youth on responsible internet use.
She mentioned that youths were given an understanding of the importance of cybersecurity, especially in addressing false information and online scam tactics. Many youths are still easily deceived and become victims of scammers due to a lack of knowledge. She emphasized that all parties, including adults, need to know the appropriate actions to take when faced with suspicious online situations and report them immediately to the authorities.
Nurul Hazwani also noted that youth involvement is crucial in spreading this message to school students, as the small age gap makes them more approachable and receptive to guidance.
