Kuala Lumpur: Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and individuals providing aid to flood victims must channel their efforts through the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN), urged Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. This directive aims to ensure effective disaster management and aid distribution, particularly in regions isolated by severe flooding.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nancy emphasized the challenges faced by the Social Welfare Department in reaching certain flood-affected areas such as Bekenu and Sibuti in Miri, where rising water levels hinder the delivery of essential supplies like tents. She highlighted the importance of coordinating assistance through the disaster management framework to ensure that contributions from NGOs and individuals align with the actual needs of the victims.
Nancy made these remarks following her visit to the temporary relief centre (PPS) at Dewan Haji Kamarudin, Kampung Segedup. During her visit, she also underscored the necessity for the Social Welfare Department (JKM) to register all flood victims. She stated that every affected family is eligible for RM1,000 in aid, a message that must be effectively communicated to them.
She clarified that registration is a critical step to guarantee that aid reaches the rightful recipients, although it does not imply immediate disbursement. Furthermore, Nancy stressed the department’s responsibility to maintain the PPS facilities in a condition that remains feasible and comfortable for the flood victims.
