Kuala lumpur: The use of national language in artistic works such as poetry, verse, and song lyrics continues to play a vital role in nurturing patriotism among Malaysians despite evolving creative approaches over time. Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) director-general Dr Hazami Jahari said efforts to elevate the status of the Malay language through the arts began even before independence and remain relevant today as a medium to instil love for the nation.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, contemporary artistic works tend to focus more on the meaning of independence by exploring issues faced by a sovereign nation, compared to earlier works, which centred on the struggle against colonial rule. Dr Hazami highlighted how the song Malaysia MADANI, performed by Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza, ignites a spirit of unity and harmony, similar to other patriotic songs produced in the past.

Dr Hazami emphasized that literary works such as Putera Gunung Tahan and Jiwa Hamba, written before independence, exemplify how the arts were used as a platform for resistance and to raise national consciousness. These artistic expressions, whether by past freedom fighters or today’s creative voices, represent a continuous effort to shape a generation that loves their homeland.

He also called for greater reinforcement of the national language across various platforms, including advertising, branding, and the naming of places, roads, and premises. Dr Hazami noted that the comprehensive use of the national language reflects a country’s identity, and it is fitting to empower its usage, especially since the majority of Malaysians understand Malay.

Furthermore, he pointed out that the media plays a critical role in setting an example through proper language use, which helps showcase the beauty and strength of the national language.
