Klang: The Ministry of National Unity has called on the National Archives of Malaysia (NAM) to strengthen its engagement with individuals, historians, organizations, and cultural figures who hold valuable historical materials, to ensure the nation does not lose important parts of its historical legacy.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang emphasized that such efforts could be carried out through initiatives like the Community Archives. These programs aim to enrich the country’s historical narrative and provide better context to past events. The minister highlighted the importance of documenting local stories and events, which are often overlooked but are vital for understanding the broader context of national history.
Aaron stressed that history is not only found in textbooks or official records but also lives in the stories and memories of communities. He pointed out that every village, town, and district has its own unique story contributing to the national identity. After launching the Community Archives program, he encouraged the public to contribute personal collections to NAM to expand the national archive and address gaps in historical documentation.
He proposed establishing a Community Archive center in every community and district in collaboration with local authorities. This initiative aims to sustain active community involvement in identifying, collecting, acquiring, and preserving historical heritage. Aaron also suggested developing a dedicated Community Archives portal, allowing researchers, communities, and contributors to access and explore historical materials online. He emphasized that individuals are witnesses to key moments, guardians of tradition, and agents of change, without whose active involvement much of the heritage risks being lost over time.
The Community Archive program was launched at the Royal Klang City Council (MBDK) Heritage Gallery, featuring sessions for submission of materials and documents, material copying services, collection conservation, and book-binding services. Exhibition booths and demonstrations related to art, culture, and the history of the country’s heritage were also part of the program. The event was attended by ANM director-general Datuk Jaafar Sidek Abdul Rahman, ANM advisory board chairman Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom, and MBDK mayor Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain.
