NADMA Appointed As Malaysia’s National Focal Point For UN Climate Fund

Kuala lumpur: The National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) will be appointed as Malaysia's National Focal Point (NFP) for the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), to strengthen the country's access to international financing related to climate change impacts. The proposal was approved at the Seventh Meeting of the National Climate Change Action Council (MTPIN) chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim here today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the meeting was convened to strengthen the country's climate action direction through strategic decisions aimed at accelerating Malaysia's transition towards a low-carbon economy. The meeting also deliberated on four discussion papers and one information paper focusing on efforts to strengthen the country's resilience to the impacts of climate change while expediting the implementation of the low-carbon development agenda.

NRES said three strategic action plans supporting Malaysia's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0 under the Paris Agreement were also considered, namely the Just Transition Action Plan, the Gender Action Plan, and the Finance and Investment Strategy. It said the three action plans would serve as catalysts for implementing the country's climate commitments in an inclusive, equitable and sustainable manner, ensuring that the benefits of the transition to a low-carbon economy are shared by all segments of society.

Among other matters discussed were preparations for Malaysia's participation in the 31st Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP31) in Antalya, Turkiye, aimed at reinforcing the country's commitment to international climate change negotiations. The meeting also received a presentation on the Country Climate and Development Report by the World Bank, which will serve as a strategic reference in strengthening national policies and the country's low-carbon economic development agenda.

The implementation status of the Low Carbon Cities Programme, spearheaded by the Malaysia Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), was also presented, with the programme continuing to demonstrate positive progress in supporting greenhouse gas emissions reduction and promoting sustainable urban development. The meeting was attended by Federal ministers, Menteris Besar and Chief Ministers or their representatives, the Chief Secretary to the Government, as well as experts in the field of climate change.

NRES said the government remains committed to strengthening climate change mitigation and adaptation measures through a comprehensive approach involving the Federal Government, state governments, the private sector, financial institutions, communities and the public. This is to ensure that the transition towards a low-carbon economy is implemented in a fair, inclusive and resilient manner, in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI and the country's commitments under the Paris Agreement.
