MTRT 2025 Platform To Foster Understanding, Strengthen Unity

Kota bharu: The Mosque Tourism Roundtable (MTRT) 2025 serves not only as a discussion platform but also as a medium to raise awareness among mosque management of the vast potential of mosques as tourism products rooted in spirituality, history, and community. Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan highlighted the readiness of mosques to enhance their facilities and approach in welcoming visitors from across the country, regardless of religion or race.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Khairul Firdaus emphasized that mosque tourism should act as a bridge connecting visitors to Islamic values and fostering dialogue between cultures and religions. With the support of local authorities and collaborative efforts, there is confidence that Malaysia can become a global leader in the tourism sector. The ministry aims to position mosques as key tourism products that showcase Islamic heritage, architecture, and universal values.

Khairul Firdaus also noted the impressive architecture and historical significance of Malaysian mosques, ranging from centuries-old structures to modern designs. However, he stressed the importance of effective presentation to ensure tourists can appreciate the cultural and social values these mosques embody. The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), through the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC), is committed to involving more mosques in the tourism sector, including those in rural areas.

Collaboration between mosques and industry players such as travel agencies and hotels is encouraged to enhance the tourism experience and boost the local economy. MTRT 2025, held in Kota Bharu, marked its fourth edition since 2016 and was jointly organized by ITC and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM). The event gathered over 90 mosque managers and volunteers to reinforce the role of mosques as spiritual tourism landmarks.

Grand Imam of the National Mosque, Ehsan Mohd Hosni, stated the conference helped improve services for visitors and strengthen the dissemination of Islamic teachings. He noted the adoption of technology and social media by many mosques to promote their offerings. Mohd Nazri Abu Zarim, Grand Imam of the Seri Sendayan Mosque, described the conference as timely, providing insights into attracting both domestic and international tourists ahead of Visit Malaysia Year (TMM) 2026.
