MRT Corp Targets Open Tender For Bridge Portion Of Penang LRT Line In October

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) is targeting to launch the open tender for the proposed bridge portion of Penang’s Light Rail Transit (LRT) Mutiara Line project this October. Its chief executive officer (CEO), Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim, stated that the design stage has been completed and the company is now awaiting approval from the relevant authorities.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the bridge design has been developed to provide flexibility for the port industry in Penang to expand, considering its economic importance alongside tourism. Discussions have been held with the Penang Port Commission to ensure the rail bridge will not obstruct maritime routes.

Mohd Zarif emphasized that the bridge design would consider shipping lanes, as the port is crucial for Penang’s future. He mentioned the potential upgrade of Penang Port into a full-fledged container port at both North Port and South Port as a factor in the planning.

The proposed bridge alignment will span between the North and South ports in Butterworth, requiring careful long-term planning to accommodate future port expansion. The bridge will stand 62 metres above sea level, taller than the first Penang Bridge, but within limits to avoid interfering with aviation pathways.

Safety measures include fencing along the bridge, which will feature a pedestrian crossing linking Butterworth to Komtar on the island. Looking forward, Mohd Zarif noted that MRT Corp envisions the need for four LRT lines covering both Penang Island and Seberang Perai to ensure full connectivity and transport efficiency in the long term.
