Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) is actively reviewing the courses offered at institutions of higher learning (IPTs) to ensure that the programs align with current industry requirements and remain relevant.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, MOHE secretary-general Datuk Aminuddin Hassim emphasized that any new course must undergo a thorough evaluation by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) before implementation. This assessment ensures that the courses are relevant and necessary for the job market. Datuk Aminuddin noted the importance of this process, as the MQA conducts comprehensive assessments based on industry input to ensure the sustainability and market need for the courses.
Datuk Aminuddin highlighted that MOHE continually monitors the development of these courses, including those at private institutions, considering the costs and readiness involved in implementing any program. His comments came during the closing ceremony of the 19th Malaysia FIRA Cup 2026, where he addressed the actions of several institutions in abolishing courses that no longer meet job market demands.
Throughout each academic session, the IPT senate evaluates proposals to introduce new courses or discontinue existing ones, aligning with current needs and new government policies. This rigorous process is also applied to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, such as polytechnics and community colleges. This year, the review included several programs like the Diploma in Textile Technology.
Furthermore, Datuk Aminuddin mentioned that MOHE is working on upgrading 10 polytechnics to Premier Polytechnic status by 2027. This upgrade would enable these institutions to introduce Bachelor's Degree programs, thus strengthening the country's TVET sector.
In addition, Datuk Aminuddin advised Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) graduates not to decline offers for admission to IPTs due to financial concerns. He assured that the government provides various forms of assistance to help ease the financial burdens of students. MOHE is committed to supporting students in need through multiple aid channels.
