MOF and KPDN Collaborate to Reassess Import Mechanisms Amid Ringgit Strengthening

Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Finance (MOF) will continue to work with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) to examine mechanisms related to developments in the prices of imported goods following the strengthening of the ringgit. Finance Minister Il Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan stated that the ringgit has appreciated by about 14 percent against the US dollar since early last year and by around 6.5 to 7 percent against other major currencies. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Amir Hamzah emphasized that the rise of the ringgit is beneficial for imported goods, with the current focus on ensuring that importers pass the lower costs on to consumers. He mentioned that this aspect is under analysis and collaboration with KPDN, and the authorities will observe if there is an opportunity to reduce the prices of imported goods. Amir Hamzah also noted that not all prices are expected to decline due to cost increases over recent years. A balance must be achieved between existing cost structures an d current market conditions. Discussing the economic performance, he highlighted data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) indicating that Malaysia's economy remains robust, with a GDP growth of 6.3 percent in the fourth quarter and 5.2 percent for the full year last year, ranking among the highest in ASEAN. He attributed this performance to the effectiveness of the government's comprehensive economic reforms, which include social protection measures and targeted interventions designed to ensure that growth benefits are widely distributed. Amir Hamzah also pointed out that the stronger ringgit and improved economic performance have bolstered public confidence, as reflected in increased spending and mobility, which are indicators of enhanced purchasing power and economic stability. Despite these positive developments, he stressed that the government is focused on long-term efforts to strengthen the economy, attract quality investments, and ensure that development benefits are channeled to the po pulace through targeted initiatives like the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) initiative.
