MOE Announces New Safety Measures for Educational Institutions

Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Education (MOE) is set to implement key measures to ensure the safety of educational institutions under its jurisdiction, including safety audits at all institutions, such as fully residential schools and daily hostels. Education director-general Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad revealed in a statement today that these audits will focus on the adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to safety.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the findings from these audits are expected to be presented to MOE’s top management within three months. Additionally, the ministry is committed to improving safety SOPs in schools and implementing measures to address disciplinary issues, including bullying, across all educational institutions.

Mohd Azam emphasized the importance of revising existing SOPs and guidelines to ensure they meet current and future needs. He also announced that the complaint system, including the portal for reporting bullying, will be revamped. The new system will be more user-friendly and offer an anonymous reporting option to safeguard the identities of complainants and witnesses.

A reform committee, comprising academics, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), experts, police, parents, the community, and the private sector, will be formed to enhance safety at MOE’s learning institutions. Mohd Azam stressed that the ministry will take a firm stance against bullying offenses, with actions including suspension and expulsion. The ‘Bangkit Bermaruah’ intervention program, focused on community service and character development, has been introduced specifically for suspended students.

He cautioned that administrators, teachers, and district and state education officers will face disciplinary actions if they fail to address bullying complaints according to existing guidelines. Furthermore, psychosocial support will be reinforced at every level to ensure the well-being of students, teachers, and the school community. Guidance and counseling teachers are highlighted as key players in prevention and intervention efforts to combat bullying.
