MIMOS Partners with Uzbekistan to Boost Semiconductor Sector

Tashkent: Mimos Bhd, an innovation centre under Malaysia’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), has entered into a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Economy and Finance and Uzeltexsanoat (UzETS). This collaboration is aimed at advancing Uzbekistan’s semiconductor sector.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, UzETS serves as Uzbekistan’s state-run association responsible for the advancement and global integration of the electrotechnical and electronics industries. MIMOS has committed to supporting Uzbekistan in developing capabilities across semiconductor manufacturing, talent development, technology transfer, and product commercialisation. The MoU was formalized on June 13 during the International Investment Forum in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The agreement aims to elevate Uzbekistan’s electrical and electronics (E and E) sector, positioning the country as a significant player in the regional and global semiconductor supply chain within the next decade. MIMOS highlighted the strategic benefits this collaboration brings to Malaysia by opening a new market in Central Asia for Malaysian technical know-how, intellectual property, and training services.

MIMOS acting president and group chief executive officer, Dr Saat Shukri Embong, expressed that the partnership allows MIMOS to share expertise and facilities with Uzbekistan, aiding in the growth of its semiconductor industry and reinforcing Malaysia’s role as a global sector leader. The initiative also provides opportunities for Malaysian SMEs and industry players to meet the demand for high-value services and products as Uzbekistan enhances its technological infrastructure.

Uzbekistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Jamshid Kuchkarov, who attended the MoU briefing, acknowledged that MIMOS’ involvement offers a strategic foundation for Uzbekistan’s E and E ambitions, allowing the country to advance without starting from scratch. Additionally, a special-purpose vehicle will be created under this initiative, with plans to evolve into a commercial joint venture to spearhead Uzbekistan’s national E and E master plan.
