Kuala Lumpur: All insurers and takaful operators have agreed to extend the deadline for the reinstatement of medical and health insurance/takaful (MHIT) policies and certificates without imposing a waiting period to August 31, 2025, from the original deadline of June 30, 2025.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the extension comes as a relief to policyholders, ensuring that no new medical examinations or health declarations are needed. This decision aims to facilitate policy or certificate holders in resuming their medical protection coverage seamlessly. The Life Insurance Association of Malaysia (LIAM), Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA), and Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia (PIAM) jointly made this announcement, emphasizing their commitment to providing long-term protection and supporting those who may have surrendered or lapsed their policies due to premium adjustments.
The initiative, initially announced in December 2024, allows for the reinstatement of original policies or certificates that lapsed or were surrendered during the MHIT repricing exercise in 2024. Policyholders are now granted an extended period until August 31, 2025, to request reinstatement, offering them additional time and flexibility.
This extension particularly benefits policyholders in rural or digitally underserved areas, ensuring equitable access to restore their coverage. The associations highlighted that the reinstatement option reflects the industry’s proactive approach to maintaining long-term protection for Malaysians and underscores the importance of MHIT as a crucial safety net amid economic uncertainties.
Policy or certificate holders are encouraged to reach out to their respective insurers or takaful operators to initiate the reinstatement process before the extended deadline.
