Melaka JKR Urged to Adhere Strictly to Project Timelines

Melaka: The Public Works Department (JKR) has been directed to constantly monitor project implementation under its purview to ensure the set schedules are met. Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan emphasized the importance of this oversight, particularly for contractors who intentionally delay projects without valid reasons, resulting in stalled projects.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ahmad Maslan stated, "We do not like delayed projects or EOT (extension of time). We want all our entrusted projects to be ahead of schedule, and this is a general principle that is accepted and emphasized by the Minister (Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi) and even the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) himself." He stressed the need for timely pre-construction phases, especially for projects like the Women's and Children's Ward Building of the Melaka Hospital, which have already been publicly announced. Ahmad urged the director and relevant parties to stay updated on developments to swiftly transition projects from the pre-construction to the implementation phase.

During a press conference following a briefing session in Melaka, Ahmad highlighted his desire for 159 federal construction and maintenance projects, valued at RM2.7 billion and identified by the Melaka JKR, to follow the principle of being ahead of schedule through all phases, including planning, construction, and handover.

In the briefing, Ahmad expressed satisfaction with Melaka JKR's accomplishments but pointed out the need for immediate completion of the only sick project, the Lesung Batu Mosque in Machap Jaya, Alor Gajah, through diligent monitoring. Additionally, he approved an application by Merlimau assemblyman Datuk Muhamad Akmal Saleh for urgent drainage repairs in a flood-prone area, illustrating the importance of timely project approvals to resolve significant issues faced by residents.
