Kuala Lumpur: Media practitioners are positioned as ‘ambassadors’ in promoting Malaysia’s leadership role as ASEAN Chair for 2025. Universiti Malaya’s Dr. Mohammad Tawfik Yaakub emphasized the importance of media in reporting on Malaysia’s initiatives, policies, and achievements, especially in areas like economic integration, political stability, and sustainable development.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Mohammad Tawfik highlighted that the role of local media extends beyond merely delivering news. He noted that the media plays a pivotal role in advocating for people’s rights, promoting justice, and showcasing leadership that serves as an example for other ASEAN member states. He stressed that media acts as a communication bridge between the government and the public and extends its influence across ASEAN borders to enhance diplomatic ties.
Dr. Mohammad Tawfik pointed out that journalistic reports significantly impact diplomatic relationships, and media serves as an ‘ambassador’ by fostering closer ties among ASEAN nations. This includes resolving issues and promoting strengths like political stability and cultural richness. With Malaysia set to chair ASEAN in 2025, he sees this as an opportunity for the media to emphasize national achievements like political stability and the Unity government’s policies.
He further stated that Malaysian media excellence is internationally recognized, as evidenced by Malaysia’s rise in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders, moving up 19 places to the 88th position. This reflects the success of Malaysian journalists and the Unity government’s support in enhancing the media’s role.
In light of National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2025, Dr. Mohammad Tawfik expressed hope for continued media advocacy for Malaysia’s achievements, particularly among ASEAN member states. The HAWANA 2025 celebration will be highlighted by an event at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur on June 14, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, with around 1,000 media practitioners expected to attend.
Organized by the Ministry of Communications with Bernama as the implementing agency, HAWANA will feature events like a Pantun Festival, a pre-launch event at Wisma Bernama, and a media forum co-hosted with the Malaysian Press Institute. Additional activities include a three-day carnival and exhibition, traditional-themed sports, and a roadshow to polytechnics in Selangor, Perak, and Johor.
Now in its fifth edition since 2018, HAWANA is held annually to honor media professionals’ contributions to national development, with past celebrations in Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Perak, and Sarawak.
