Media Innovation Fund to Open in January 2026: Fahmi

Kuala lumpur: The first phase of the Media Innovation Fund (Dana Inovasi Media) is set to open from January 1 to 14, 2026, with the aim of supporting the transformation of Malaysia’s media industry to maintain its relevance and competitiveness in the digital era. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced the initiative following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s earlier declaration during the National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2025 in June, which included a provision of RM30 million in funding assistance.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the fund is designed to encourage the creation of creative, interactive, and high-impact media content, while also enhancing the competencies of media practitioners through training. It seeks to support the transformation of the media industry by developing innovative projects across content, media technology, and digital strategies, thereby strengthening the competitiveness of media organizations in delivering accurate and relevant information to the public.

Further details and application forms will be available for download from the fund’s website starting January 1, 2026. Eligibility criteria include registration with the Information Department (JAPEN) and media employees holding valid accreditation cards, ensuring the disbursement of funds is managed with integrity and effectiveness.

Fahmi outlined the four main areas covered by the Media Innovation Fund. The first area focuses on training for media practitioners, allowing for in-house training or external courses. The second area supports software and technology adaptation, providing funds for certified software to enhance content production. The third area includes equipment, hardware, and support facilities, enabling the purchase or rental of technical equipment to boost high-quality content production. The fourth area supports research and development in content production, including the adoption of artificial intelligence technology and digital innovations.

Fahmi also mentioned plans to convey the Prime Minister’s views and recommendations to the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) regarding its role in strengthening the media industry. This effort is intended to ensure the media remains competitive and sustainable and to address sector challenges such as economic issues.

A meeting with the Media Council is anticipated in early January to discuss aspects like fund distribution, office arrangements, and administrative matters. The Prime Minister highlighted the MMC’s potential role in advising on media freedom, including identifying laws affecting press freedom and setting clear parameters for media freedom in Malaysia’s diverse society.
