MCMC Tasked with Ensuring Optimal 4G, 5G Coverage at RTS Link Stations Before 2027 Operations

Johor bahru: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been directed to ensure that 4G and 5G network coverage at the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link stations reaches an optimal level before the service begins operations on January 1, 2027. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil emphasized this as a priority to provide commuters with a seamless digital experience from the first day the cross-border rail service commences.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister Fahmi expressed his intentions to conduct an inspection with MCMC during a future visit. He highlighted the importance of having robust network coverage at the RTS stations before the operations begin in 2027. Fahmi spoke to reporters after visiting the Malaysian National News Agency's operations room in conjunction with the Johor state election.

Addressing concerns about weak internet coverage in rural areas, Fahmi noted that most issues are expected to be resolved through Phase Two of the National Digital Network (JENDELA). He explained that the construction of new telecommunications towers typically requires 12 to 24 months due to land acquisition and approvals from local authorities. In some areas, existing infrastructure might be utilized, but they might not yet be fully equipped by telecommunications service providers.

Additionally, Fahmi mentioned that the government is exploring other technologies, such as the Starlink satellite internet service, to provide faster internet access in communities with limited connectivity. He pointed out that coverage challenges in northern Johor and the east coast are influenced by terrain, vast oil palm plantations, and widely dispersed populations, which require tailored approaches.

Fahmi acknowledged that building new towers may not always be commercially viable but assured that various alternative technologies are available. He entrusted MCMC with examining potential solutions. The RTS Link Project is a railway shuttle approximately four kilometers in length, featuring stations in Bukit Chagar, Johor Bahru, and Woodlands North, Singapore.
