MBSA Destroys Cryptocurrency Mining Equipment Worth RM800,000

Kuala lumpur: The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) today disposed of cryptocurrency bitcoin mining equipment seized throughout last year, with an estimated value of RM800,000, following enforcement actions against illegal mining activities.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MBSA Corporate and Public Relations director Mohd Fauzi Aziz Maamor stated that the disposal took place under the Enforcement Department Non-Perishable Goods Disposal programme at Depoh Tunda Harian MBSA in Section 17. The aim of this programme is to ensure that all confiscated items that have completed the legal process are disposed of according to established procedures while curbing and preventing illegal cryptocurrency mining activities, which are often linked to illegal electricity connections.

Mohd Fauzi highlighted that these activities not only result in losses to public utilities but also pose fire risks and threaten the safety of premises and nearby residents. The disposal operation was conducted in accordance with Regulations 3 and 38 of the MBSA Trade, Business and Industry Licensing By-Laws 2007, and Section 116 of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974.

The programme also involved strategic cooperation with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to strengthen enforcement against illegal cryptocurrency mining activities, particularly those involving electricity theft and violations under the Electricity Supply Act 1990. MBSA remains committed to ensuring that business activities within its administrative area are conducted in accordance with the law and do not compromise public safety, infrastructure, and community well-being.

Mohd Fauzi urged premise owners and operators to comply with licensing requirements and applicable laws. He also encouraged the public to channel information to MBSA or relevant agencies if they detect any suspected illegal cryptocurrency mining activities.
