Penang: The Penang Port Commission (SPPP) and Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) are extending an offer of free ferry services to Malaysians on September 16 as part of the Malaysia Day celebrations and the Keretapi Sarong Festival.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, SPPP chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin announced that the free ferry service will be available for trips from both ferry terminals-Pangkalan Sultan Abdul Halim (PSAH) in Seberang Perai and Pangkalan Raja Tun Uda (PRTU). The offer aligns with the existing service schedule.

Yeoh expressed hope that the initiative would help alleviate the financial burden on Malaysians, while also providing an opportunity to celebrate Malaysia Day and participate in the Keretapi Sarong Festival. He mentioned that commuters would save RM2 per one-way trip for pedestrians and RM2.50 for two-wheeled vehicle users.

During last year's Malaysia Day celebration, Yeoh noted that 10,094 pedestrians and 1,909 two-wheeled vehicles used the ferry service for round trips. These numbers contributed to the annual total of 3,131,131 pedestrians and 784,065 two-wheeled vehicles recorded in 2025.

Yeoh also highlighted that the initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion in Penang and encourages the use of more sustainable and efficient public transportation options.
