Malaysia’s Stock Market Remains Competitive, Resilient Amid Global Headwinds

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia's stock market remains resilient and competitive amid global supply chain and geopolitical headwinds, said Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir. He noted that confidence in the local capital market is evident through at least 30 new listings or initial public offerings slated for 2026.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Akmal Nasrullah highlighted the persistent potential of the stock market, emphasizing the continued interest and investment opportunities within the country. Speaking at a bumiputera company networking session organized by the Bumiputera Agenda Steering Unit (TERAJU), he announced that a bumiputera company is expected to be listed on the stock market next week.

TERAJU, an agency under the Ministry of Economy, aims to have 10 to 20 bumiputera companies listed on Bursa Malaysia by 2030. This goal aligns with government efforts to strengthen bumiputera companies' participation in the capital market and enhance their competitiveness.

The minister explained that TERAJU, through its Accelerate programme, will adopt a targeted approach to guide companies, focusing on funding, governance, and business strategy. He stressed that a tailored approach, matching the needs and potential of each company, is essential for growth support.

This initiative aligns with the aspirations of PuTERA35, focusing on not only ownership but also on strengthening market dominance and competitiveness of bumiputera companies at regional and international levels.

Akmal further revealed that among the 97 new listings over the past three years, only one was bumiputera-majority-owned, with bumiputera companies comprising merely about seven percent of those listed on Bursa Malaysia. This underscores the necessity for a structured and strategic plan to enhance bumiputera companies' participation in the capital market ecosystem.

TERAJU CEO Junady Nawawi noted that the agency's achievements in 2025 have fortified the foundation for developing the bumiputera ecosystem. He emphasized that TERAJU's mandate is to create a sustainable, inclusive, and competitive development ecosystem for bumiputera. The four new programmes launched this year aim to assist bumiputera companies in advancing to the next level, including public listing and regional market expansion.
