Malaysia’s IPI Rises 2.7% in April 2025, Driven by Manufacturing Growth

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s Industrial Production Index (IPI) for April 2025 saw a 2.7 percent increase year-on-year, as reported by the Statistics Department Malaysia (DOSM).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the IPI, which includes the manufacturing, mining, and electricity sectors, showed significant growth due to a 5.6 percent rise in the manufacturing sector. Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin highlighted that while manufacturing supported the overall increase, the mining and electricity sectors experienced declines of 6.3 percent and 1.6 percent, respectively.

Export-oriented industries within the manufacturing sector grew by 6.4 percent in April 2025, compared to a 4.8 percent growth in March 2025. This performance was largely driven by a 22.8 percent increase in the manufacturing of vegetable and animal oils and fats, along with an 11.1 percent rise in computers, electronics, and optical products.

The DOSM further reported a 3.9 percent expansion in domestic-oriented industries for April 2025, up from 2.3 percent in the previous month. This momentum was bolstered by increases in the manufacturing of food processing products (8.2 percent), fabricated metal products excluding machinery and equipment (5.0 percent), and basic metals (6.0 percent).

The 6.3 percent decline in the mining sector was attributed to decreased production in natural gas and crude petroleum and condensate, which fell by 10.0 percent and 0.7 percent, respectively. On a month-to-month basis, the mining index saw a drop of 13.9 percent following a 17.8 percent growth in March 2025.

For the electricity sector, the 1.6 percent decline marked an improvement over the 2.2 percent contraction in March 2025. Globally, DOSM noted an upward trend in most countries’ IPI for April 2025, with Taiwan and Vietnam observing robust year-on-year growth of 22.3 percent and 10.2 percent, respectively. Moderate increases were also seen in China, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the United States, and Japan.
