Malaysia’s Address System Poised to Meet Global Standards, Says Geoscape Australia CTO

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia has the potential to develop a more efficient National Address System (NAS), comparable to those of other developed nations such as Australia, according to Geoscape Australia’s Chief Technical Officer, Joseph Abhayaratna. He noted that the shared characteristics in terms of administrative structure and technical challenges present an opportunity for Malaysia to enhance its address management capabilities on a national scale.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abhayaratna pointed out that both Malaysia and Australia face similar hurdles due to their multiple states and territorial jurisdictions, each maintaining its own address databases and lists. He expressed confidence that Malaysia could replicate Australia’s success in urban addressing, given the similarities in the challenges both countries face. This was discussed at the National Address Conference 2025, where Abhayaratna shared insights into how Australia’s NAS, developed by Geoscape, has contributed significantly to the country’s economy.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil previously announced that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had agreed to implement the NAS during the Digital Economy and Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) Council meeting. The system is highlighted as a key driver in both the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint and the National 4IR Policy, aimed at propelling Malaysia towards becoming a high-income nation through digitalisation.

Abhayaratna explained that Australia’s NAS has generated over AUD 1.4 billion in economic value, establishing it as one of the country’s essential national assets. He emphasized the potential benefits of adopting a similar system in Malaysia, stressing the importance of proper planning and the right conditions for success.

He also commended the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for their efforts in developing a unified and authoritative address system, officially backed by the government. Abhayaratna expressed confidence that the NAS initiative would enable a more efficient and organized data system in Malaysia, benefiting its citizens.

The 2025 National Address Conference, which spans two days, features 15 presentations by both local and international speakers. The opening ceremony will be officiated by Fahmi tomorrow.
