Malaysian Media Council Seeks Greater Involvement from Social Media Platforms: Fahmi

Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Media Council (MMM) is set to be strengthened as a self-regulatory body to ensure the ethical and responsible growth of the nation's media ecosystem. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil announced government support for the council's early stages, emphasizing the importance of encouraging both media organizations and social media platforms to join.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, greater membership in the council would enable more effective management of media-related issues through self-regulation. Fahmi noted the government's commitment to aiding the MMM's development and the encouragement of media organizations to independently address issues.

During a press conference at the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) operations center for the 16th Johor state election, Fahmi emphasized the need for swift and energetic support for the new body. Bernama CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and other officials were in attendance.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also highlighted the council's role, stating that complaints against journalists from recognized media organizations should be referred to the MMM first, ensuring fair and transparent scrutiny.

Fahmi underscored the significance of social media platforms joining the MMM, especially as media content challenges extend beyond traditional organizations. He mentioned that while most media adhere to ethical standards, social media content often lacks consideration for local sensitivities.

Citing a recent incident in Banting involving the circulation of sensitive content on social media, Fahmi stressed the need for these platforms to adopt self-regulatory measures through the MMM. He expressed hope that this initiative would enhance Malaysia's standing in the Media Freedom Index.
