Stockholm: A group of Malaysians are set to challenge some of the world's best endurance athletes at the upcoming HYROX World Championships in Sweden and Challenge Roth triathlon in Germany.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Malaysian contingent includes several athletes aged above 60, led by the eldest representative Tan Ay Bing, 69, who will compete at the HYROX World Championships in Strawberry Arena, Stockholm from June 18 to 21, proving that age is no barrier to competition. Other HYROX participants are Terence Poon Chau Chun, 64, Lee Ho Kiat, 36, Kyle See and Mandy Chai, both aged 25, as well as sisters Dr Yeap Jing Eng, 65, Yeap Jing Ching, 62, and Yeap Jing Nee, 59.
Meanwhile, KL Wellness City (KLWC) Executive Director Datuk Seri Dr Vincent Tiew, 50, and Ng Choon Keith, 42, will compete at Challenge Roth in Bavaria, Germany on July 5, widely regarded as one of the most prestigious long-distance triathlon events in the world.
All 10 athletes, representing Team KLWC, were honoured at a send-off ceremony officiated by Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Mordi Bimol. Vincent emphasized the commitment, discipline, and perseverance required for endurance sports, noting that the majority of the participants are above 50.
'As I prepare for Challenge Roth, Challenge Malaysia and Ironman Langkawi later this year, I am inspired by the dedication shown by our fellow athletes who have earned the opportunity to represent Malaysia on the world stage. We are proud to support them on this journey,' Vincent remarked, expressing hopes of achieving his 20th full long-distance triathlon completion.
Mordi praised the athletes' participation as a demonstration of the growing culture of health, fitness, and active living among Malaysians. 'It is truly inspiring to see Malaysian athletes stepping onto the world stage with such determination and passion. Their commitment to excellence reflects the spirit of Malaysia MADANI,' he stated.
The HYROX World Championships is the season finale that brings together the top 0.5 per cent of HYROX athletes worldwide. The competition combines eight one-kilometre runs with eight functional fitness stations. Athletes compete across Singles, Doubles, and Relay divisions, with more than US$300,000 in prize money on offer.
Challenge Roth race comprises a 3.8-kilometre swim, a 180-kilometre cycling leg, and a full marathon run of 42.2 kilometres, attracting elite triathletes and amateur competitors from around the world. Renowned for its electric atmosphere, the event draws hundreds of thousands of spectators annually.
