Abu Dhabi: The leaders of Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) recently concluded a significant three-day meeting in Abu Dhabi, marking a pivotal moment in strengthening bilateral, trade, and economic relations between the two nations.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to the UAE was his second official trip to the country and his first as ASEAN chair for 2025. The visit emphasized the importance of economic partnerships between Malaysia, a nation with a robust trading background, and the UAE, known for its efforts in economic diversification within a resource-rich region.
One of the key outcomes of this visit was the signing of the Malaysia-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (MY-UAE CEPA). This agreement marks Malaysia’s first Free Trade Agreement with a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). It provides immediate duty-free access for 6,331 product tariff lines, with a focus on expanding benefits to key Malaysian exports such as crude palm oil and electronics over the next seven years.
The CEPA also includes an Islamic Chapter aimed at enhancing sectors like halal trade and Islamic finance. This chapter is expected to stimulate growth in bilateral trade and investment, particularly supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and preparing Malaysia for upcoming Malaysia-GCC Free Trade Agreement (MGFTA) negotiations.
Another significant development was the memorandum of understanding (MoU) under the Malaysia MADANI Artificial Intelligence (MMAI) initiative, signed by Malaysia’s Home Minister and UAE’s Minister of Investment. This initiative aims to foster cooperation in artificial intelligence and related technologies, emphasizing public safety and technological advancement.
The partnership underscores the commitment of both nations to utilize AI for broader societal benefits and to enhance collaboration in AI through platforms like the ASEAN-GCC Economic Forum. This forum aims to unite regional players in addressing global challenges through policy, industry, and innovation.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s participation in a dialogue at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2025 further highlighted Malaysia’s commitment to sustainable development and energy transition. His meeting with UAE Vice-President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Rashid Al Maktoum resulted in agreements to renew cooperation in energy, food security, and technology, reflecting the UAE’s interest in deepening ties with ASEAN.
These developments are set to enhance the GCC-ASEAN partnership, contributing to regional economic integration and positioning Malaysia as a strategic entry point for UAE businesses into ASEAN. The positive reception of Prime Minister Anwar by UAE leaders indicates a promising future for Malaysia-UAE relations, paving the way for a long-lasting and mutually beneficial partnership.
