Malaysia, Thailand To Forge Border Economic Partnership, Uplift Poorer Provinces

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia and Thailand are working closely to forge a new partnership aimed at uplifting impoverished provinces on both sides of the border, said Malaysia’s Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar stated that by focusing on the poorer provinces in southern Thailand and northern Malaysia, the two countries can collaborate to strengthen economic ties, which could drive growth and help address outstanding issues.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted ongoing border disputes, noting that they continue to exist despite Malaysia’s maritime nature and its border issues with all neighboring countries. However, these disputes have not deterred Malaysia from prioritizing excellent bilateral relations, peace, and security while working collaboratively on economic, cultural, political, and educational issues with Thailand.

Anwar made these remarks during his keynote speech at the 38th Asia-Pacific Roundtable, a premier regional forum organized by the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia. The 38th APR, held from June 17 to 19, focused on the theme ‘Recalibrating Asia’s Frontier’ and brought together diplomats, scholars, and policymakers to tackle rising geopolitical tensions, shifting power dynamics, and the future of regional cooperation in an uncertain world.

He further emphasized Malaysia’s role as the holder of the ASEAN Chairmanship this year, expressing the fortune of exploring and expanding regional horizons. Anwar underscored the significance of the year for both the region and shared hopes and aspirations, stressing the need for agents of change to not only reflect ASEAN’s values but also shape them, confront regional challenges, and renew commitments to shared responsibilities and regional integration.
