Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia is set to make history by hosting the 2025 Lawn Bowls World Cup from November 4-8, following Hong Kong’s withdrawal as the original host. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh announced the development, highlighting the recognition given by the international governing body, World Bowls, to the Malaysian Lawn Bowls Federation (MLBF) as a significant milestone for the sport’s advancement in Malaysia.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Malaysia Stadium Corporation (PSM) has pledged full cooperation to ensure the successful execution of the World Cup. Yeoh emphasized the importance of hosting world-class tournaments locally, providing opportunities for Malaysian athletes to compete at the highest level without the financial burden of traveling overseas. The upcoming event will see participation from 12 countries, including Australia, England, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa, Canada, India, Hong Kong, Ireland, the United States, Wales, and host nation Malaysia.
Yeoh also mentioned that the MLBF is currently in the process of submitting applications to obtain necessary support and funding for the event. Meanwhile, MLBF president Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz disclosed that Malaysia was named as the host for the 2025 World Cup only after Hong Kong withdrew due to its inability to meet the terms set by World Bowls. The official offer letter from World Bowls was received on May 14, indicating Hong Kong’s withdrawal occurred the day prior.
In related news, lawn bowls gained attention in Malaysia when Nor Farah Ain Abdullah was honored as Sportswoman of the Year at the 2024 National Sports Awards. This accolade recognized her achievement of winning the women’s singles gold medal at the 2024 World Indoor Bowls Championships held in Guernsey, Channel Islands, last April.
