Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced Malaysia's willingness to assist the Philippines following a significant earthquake that hit the southern region of the country. He emphasized Malaysia's readiness to provide any necessary support to help those affected by the disaster.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar expressed his deep concern for the Filipino people, offering thoughts and prayers for those impacted by the earthquake. He shared these sentiments in a Facebook post, highlighting the solidarity between Malaysia and the Philippines during this challenging time.
The Prime Minister also pointed out that the tremors were felt in Malaysia, particularly in parts of Sabah. He reassured the Malaysian public that the government is actively monitoring the situation and has put emergency services on high alert to respond if needed.
Anwar emphasized the close relationship between Malaysia and the Philippines, both as friends and ASEAN partners. He conveyed his hopes for the safety and well-being of all affected individuals, wishing them strength and courage in the days to come.
The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.9, struck Mindanao at 7.37 am at a depth of 50 kilometers. The epicenter was pinpointed at latitude 5.7 degrees north and longitude 125.1 degrees east. In the aftermath, authorities issued a tsunami warning, predicting waves of up to 0.4 meters to impact coastal areas in Tawau, Semporna, Kunak, and Lahad Datu between 10.30 am and noon today.
