Kuala Lumpur: Li Shi Feng has made a historic achievement by becoming the first Chinese men’s singles player to win the Malaysia Masters, capturing the title at the 2025 edition held at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil. The 25-year-old emerged victorious against unseeded Indian shuttler Srikanth Kidambi in straight sets, 21-11, 21-9, in a swift 36-minute match.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Li Shi Feng expressed his surprise at being the first Chinese player to win the event and considered it a significant milestone. He highlighted the importance of the victory as an affirmation and encouragement, especially after consistently reaching the semi-finals in previous years. Li is now setting his sights on the Singapore Open 2025, where he will face Japan’s Koki Watanabe in the opening round.
In contrast, legendary player Lin Dan only reached the first rounds of the Malaysia Masters in 2018 and 2020. Meanwhile, top seed Wang Zhi Yi of China successfully defended her women’s singles title, defeating compatriot Han Yue in a challenging 75-minute match. Wang expressed her joy in retaining the title, emphasizing the inspiration it has given her to continue competing in Malaysia.
In the mixed doubles category, Chinese duo Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping overcame top seeds Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin in a hard-fought 63-minute contest. Dong Ping acknowledged the difficulties faced during the second set but praised their strategic adjustments, which led to their victory in the Super 500 tournament.
Additionally, the women’s doubles title was won by Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning, who defeated fellow Chinese players Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian in straight sets. The winners of the singles events received a prize of approximately USD35,625, while the winning pairs in the doubles categories took home USD37,525.
