Malaysia Initiates ‘Roads Must Have Internet’ Drive to Enhance Highway Connectivity

Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is set to collaborate with the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) as part of a strategic initiative to enhance highway connectivity across the nation. This effort, unveiled by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, targets nearly 50 kilometers of road that currently lack telecommunications coverage.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that every road in Malaysia is equipped with internet access. Fahmi emphasized that the project aligns with the principle of “where there’s a road, there’s Internet,” and aims to improve connectivity along highways nationwide. The initiative is expected to be included in Phase Two of the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA), which may necessitate the construction of new towers in various key locations.

During a visit to the YES Tanjung Asam 4G MOCN Tower, Fahmi expressed optimism about the ongoing discussions regarding the project. He was accompanied by Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari, and Bayan Lepas assemblyman Datuk Azrul Mahathir Aziz.

Fahmi also revealed plans to implement proof of concept (POC) for direct-to-cell technology using Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites in select locations later this year. Although technical issues have caused delays, discussions with LEO satellite operators are underway to tackle connectivity challenges in remote and maritime areas. Fahmi highlighted the potential of this technology to function as cell towers from space, providing crucial connectivity for emergencies in isolated regions, such as islands and coastlines.
