Malaysia Explores Defence R&D Partnerships with Turkey and Other Nations

Kuala lumpur: The government of Malaysia is currently evaluating offers for research and development collaboration in the defence sector with several countries, notably Turkey, in an effort to enhance the country’s self-defence capabilities and decrease reliance on foreign entities. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin highlighted that the cooperation would encompass various areas, including Border Security Systems, Professional Radio Systems, and Air Defence Systems.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamed Khaled emphasized the government’s dedication to bolstering local defence capabilities through a multifaceted approach. This strategy includes the advancement of technology, weapons systems, and the enhancement of human capital. These remarks were made in response to Kamal Ashaari (PN-Kuala Krau) during a question and answer session in the Dewan Rakyat.

Kamal inquired about the government’s plans to develop self-defence and military capabilities, particularly focusing on advancing local weapons technology and reducing dependency on external forces to address future challenges. Mohamed Khaled responded by detailing initiatives such as empowering the Science and Technology Research Institute for Defence (STRIDE) as a regional centre of excellence and the creation of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under the Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT) to reinforce the local defence industry ecosystem.

Additionally, the Defence Minister mentioned the restructuring of the Malaysian Industry Council for Defence Enforcement and Security (MIDES) into the Defence Industry Strategic Council to enhance governance and formulate a more comprehensive Industrial Collaboration Programme (ICP) policy within the defence sector. Furthermore, Mohamed Khaled disclosed that the National Defence Industry Policy (DIPN), designed as a strategic framework to promote local innovation and technology, is nearing completion and is expected to be submitted to the Cabinet by August.
