Malaysia Encourages Investments from Italian Giants in Economic Zones

Rome: Malaysia is extending a warm welcome to investments from prominent Italian corporations such as Leonardo SpA, Fincantieri SpA, and ENI SpA. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his enthusiasm for increased involvement from Italian firms in Malaysia’s special economic zones, as well as the establishment of industry training programs and technology transfer initiatives.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar conveyed this intention to his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni, during a bilateral meeting. He emphasized that the meeting heralded the potential for productive and comprehensive discussions on various aspects of bilateral cooperation, including strategic investment, defense, sustainable energy, and the development of high-tech industries such as semiconductors, electric vehicles, and artificial intelligence.

Leonardo SpA, Fincantieri SpA, and ENI SpA are well-regarded for their expertise in aerospace, defense, security, shipbuilding, and energy sectors, respectively. Anwar extended an invitation to Meloni to visit Malaysia during the ASEAN Summit in October, where she could witness the signing of an agreement between Petronas and ENI.

The joint venture involving ENI, Petronas, and Euglena in Pengerang Biorefinery Sdn Bhd is poised to position Malaysia as a regional hub for sustainable fuel production. Anwar highlighted that Indonesia’s Pertamina has also shown interest in joining this joint venture project. The biorefinery at the Pengerang Integrated Complex in Johor will produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Bio-Naphtha, and Bio-LPG, supporting Malaysia’s green energy ambitions under the National Energy Transition Roadmap and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030.

Anwar also engaged in discussions with Meloni on regional and international issues, advocating for collective solutions grounded in universal peace, justice, and mutual respect. During his three-day working visit, Anwar underscored the importance of strengthening strategic cooperation that benefits the people of both nations, rooted in genuine friendship and trust.

As ASEAN chair, Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to serving as a bridge between ASEAN and international partners, including Italy, to ensure regional stability, peace, and sustainable economic growth. He expressed confidence in the continued growth of Malaysia’s valued relationship with Italy, contributing to the progress and prosperity of both countries.
