Malaysia Embraces BRICS Call for Responsible AI Governance, Aligns ASEAN Initiatives with Global Standards

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia has welcomed the BRICS Statement on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance, voicing strong support for a vision of AI that serves development over domination, embeds ethics, reduces inequality, and respects human dignity. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that Malaysia’s own efforts, including the National Artificial Intelligence Roadmap and the AI Governance Guidelines, reflect similar principles.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, during the Member State Intervention at the BRICS Leaders’ Summit, Anwar highlighted Malaysia’s role as ASEAN Chair in championing the establishment of an ASEAN AI Safety Network. This regional initiative aims to strengthen governance and capacity in the rapidly evolving AI sector. He also pointed out the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement as a crucial platform for economic growth, suggesting that with the right investment and standards, ASEAN’s digital economy could potentially reach US$2 trillion by 2030.

Underscoring Malaysia’s commi
tment to inclusive growth, Anwar emphasized the importance of collective resolve in shaping the future. He assured that Malaysia is prepared to collaborate with BRICS and other partners to foster a fairer global economy, a more coherent digital future, and effective multilateralism. Malaysia’s active engagement in global digital and AI governance is seen as part of its broader vision for a balanced international order based on equity and shared progress.

Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s stance on multilateralism as essential for global stability, shared prosperity, and sovereign dignity. He stressed that multilateralism must deliver tangible outcomes and adapt to the rapidly fragmenting global markets. In this light, Malaysia welcomed BRICS’ commitment to an inclusive, rules-based trading system, noting that Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship theme, ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’, aligns with these priorities.

The BRICS group, initially established by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, and later expanded to inc
lude South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, serves as a forum for political and diplomatic coordination among Global South countries. In 2024, Indonesia will join the group, and nations like Malaysia, Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Nigeria, Thailand, Vietnam, Uganda, and Uzbekistan have been accepted as BRICS partner countries.

Anwar arrived earlier today to attend the 17th BRICS Leaders’ Summit hosted by Brazil, at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He is accompanied by Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz; Minister of Transport Anthony Loke; Miri member of parliament Chiew Choon Man; and Paya Besar member of parliament Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah.
