Malaysia Cup: Sabah FC’s 2-2 Draw with Melaka FC Offers Strategic Advantage

Krubong: Sabah FC interim manager Alto Linus described the 2-2 draw with Melaka FC in the Malaysia Cup campaign at the Hang Jebat Stadium, Krubong last night as a positive result for his team ahead of the return match next Thursday. He emphasized the significance of the outcome, which provides an advantage as they prepare to play in front of their home fans in the second leg at Likas Stadium, Kota Kinabalu, and are determined to secure a victory. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Alto praised the team's high commitment throughout the match, noting their resilience despite facing pressure from playing away and dealing with a shortage of central position players and injuries. Although they temporarily lost focus, allowing Melaka FC to penetrate their defense early on, Sabah FC managed to equalize the score. During the match, Melaka FC took an early lead with a second-minute goal by Muhammad Shahrel Fikri Md Fauzi, followed by Kwangil Pak's goal in the 37th minute. Sabah FC responded with a goal from Adjin Muj agic in the 14th minute and an equalizer from Fergus Tierney in the 88th minute, taking advantage of Melaka FC playing with 10 men after Dino Kalesic received a red card in the 44th minute. Alto highlighted the need for improved play and finishing, especially in the second half when Sabah FC had a player advantage but failed to capitalize on opportunities. He expressed the team's determination to excel in the decisive match and advance further in the Malaysia Cup campaign. Meanwhile, Melaka FC head coach E. Elavarasan acknowledged his team's overall strong performance but admitted the impact of losing a player affected their play style. He recognized Sabah FC as a quality and experienced team and noted the increased pressure in defending during the second half. He remarked on the nature of football, where mistakes are punished, and Sabah FC capitalized on this to secure an equalizer. E. Elavarasan concluded that the chances for both teams to win are evenly matched at 50-50, and player fitness levels will b e assessed before determining the starting lineup for the next encounter.
