Kuala lumpur: The government is committed to developing the Digital Trust and Data Security Strategy 2026-2030 and establishing an independent Data Commission to safeguard digital transformation through a comprehensive national ecosystem. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo stated that these initiatives would enhance data protection and governance, improve cyber resilience, and uphold the integrity of Malaysia’s digital ecosystem.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the strategy will ensure that the nation’s progress in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies remains secure, transparent, and accountable. Gobind explained that the Digital Trust and Data Security Strategy would provide a long-term roadmap to build resilience against emerging threats, advance data integrity, and strengthen public confidence in Malaysia’s digital future.
Gobind emphasized that the Data Commission would serve as an independent oversight body, tasked with ensuring robust data governance while promoting ethical AI practices. Speaking at the ASEAN AI Malaysia Summit 2025 (AAIMS25), he noted that the commission’s framework would be designed for interoperability across ASEAN, allowing Malaysia to contribute meaningfully to a region-wide trust architecture.
He highlighted that Malaysia’s proactive, future-oriented approach aims to meet current challenges and position the country as a leader in shaping regional and global standards for trustworthy AI and digital systems. The forthcoming strategy and commission are intended to complement and strengthen ASEAN’s collective frameworks.
Gobind also pointed out that Malaysia’s domestic initiatives would serve as building blocks for a broader ASEAN trust architecture. This architecture is expected to protect data, ensure AI safety, and foster public confidence across borders in this agentic age of AI. Malaysia is aligning with ASEAN initiatives such as the ASEAN Guide on AI Governance and Ethics, the ASEAN AI Safety Network, and the ASEAN Cybersecurity Cooperation Strategy 2026-2030.
The architecture will enable AI to operate safely across jurisdictions, ensure consistent data governance, and extend public confidence beyond national borders. Gobind concluded by stating that through collective efforts, ASEAN can close the AI divide, safeguard societies, and unlock the full potential of innovation, building an inclusive, secure, and distinctly ASEAN AI future.
